Oak Ridge Country Club is a private country club located in Hopkins, MN. Oak Ridge has an 18-hole championship course, four tennis courts, and a pool. Oak Ridge is a hot spot for venues like weddings, high school banquets, and every event you could think of. Founded in 1921, this club has a strong sense of community and knows how to have a good time.
Oak Ridge Country Club has two restaurants. One is named The 1921 Pub, and the other is the W.D. Clark Lounge. I designed a menu for the Executive Chef for both restaurants. The Chef wanted an elegant and simple menu for the club that could be used in the long term. The main restaurant, ‘The 1921 Pub,’ is a casual sporty environment, so I created a menu to incorporate that playfulness, but still kept the design to an elegant club standard. I altered the tail of the P to swoop under ‘1921’ to tie into the fun pub-like atmosphere. The headings for the food I used the Playfair Display type, and for the body type I used the sans serif typeface ‘Area Regular’ to match. The W.D. Clark Lounge menu is the same, so we kept the same layout but just changed the menu title to the name of the restaurant without any type alterations. The color added to the menu goes in accordance with the branding of the club. I created this menu with InDesign. I had the menus printed on synthetic paper through AlphaGraphics.
The Pool Cafe menu project was a diversion away from the elegant model that I had been designing with the club and tittered into the childish and fun with bright colors and more outlandish layout design. This menu was fun for me to create, especially when this is the draft of four that got the pick. The pool is tailored toward the kids, so I wanted a menu that would be fun to look at but still legible for them to read. I paired a bright yellow and blue with a texture appearing background. I printed in-house, cut, and hand-laminated 50 menus so that we could reuse them until the Chef wants to make another alteration.

My favorite menu to design was the Happy Hour menu for the club. I love when I am able to utilize illustration, and luckily, the Food and Beverage Manager and Clubhouse Director approved of the draft, where I had illustrated a beer tap handle for the custom beer that Oak Ridge provides to their members. I designed this menu around the The Masters, a famous golf tournament in Georgia. I was inspired by The Masters to create a vintage-style, illustrative menu. The colors are in accordance with the club branding, and the menus were printed, cut, and laminated in-house.

The Open at Oak Ridge Country Club
The open at Oak Ridge Country Club presented by Swing City was a tennis tournament involving college athletes from a myriad of colleges around the United States for a cash prize. I created a booklet within 24 hours with the information from the Director of Tennis. The booklet was printed in-house, and I hand-stapled about 100 booklets to hand out at the event. The booklet layout is exactly how the Tennis Director approved. I used graphics and photography that were given to me.
The Oak Ridge Country Club Course Book
The Oak Ridge Country Club Course Book was created with the intention of giving a copy to the new members who would join the club through the golf membership. This book describes the different holes of the course and gives all the underlaying information about how the course was improved from a previous deconstruction of the course. The book showcases staff that is involved in making the golf course as great and marvelous as it is now. All course photos were taken by Murphy Byrne.
Photo Gallery
Over the course of a year, I have been the house photographer for club events, holiday events, kid’s clubs, golf outings, tennis tournaments, and other random golf and dining food shoots. When taking photos, I try to take the most candid and raw photos of the Oak Ridge members as possible because I want them to be present with the memories they are actively making in the shot.
